Empathy Co-Op Art Installation
September 2, 2020
An event every day that begins at 12:00 am, repeating until September 6, 2020
Experience this art installation in-person in downtown Reno or Virtual through the Burning Man Multiverse.
The project enables people to engage and connect to a deeper, intrinsic understanding of empathy, self-awareness, and belonging within communities.
At the art installation, people will be guided through three experiences to help them gain clarity around their desires, purpose, and explore skills that contribute to a happy, meaningful life.
The art installation has been designed to create emotional closeness while still adhering to COVID-19 physical distancing requirements.
The Empathy Co-op art experience, created by Sharon DeMattia and Thomas Kohler, consists of three interactive elements using curiosity, art, and play as tools to foster empathy. This approach delivers high impact, meaningful connections and activates people to participate in collaborative communities that drive positive change. The Empathy Co-op consists of:
- A collaborative wall mural, examining what it means to be free – expressing your “wild self”
- A guided experience enabling participants to be creative and have their creations exhibited in an interactive empathy gallery
- A sculpture exhibition where participants are allowed to draw on life-sized humanoid sculptures, becoming storytellers in the process
The Empathy Co-op co-creators have included a variety of local and global community organizations to which participants can connect. “We want to make it easy for visitors to activate and direct their energy towards solutions that serve the greater good while forming new relationships and working on something they are passionate about,” said co-creator Sharon DeMattia.
The Empathy Co-op will be located in the City Plaza downtown Reno from August 30 to September 6. Simultaneously, the Empathy Co-op will launch in the Burning Man Multiverse, inviting global participation.
