In this challenging world of social distancing, people visiting the Lake Tahoe area are fortunate that so many activities are in the outdoors, under clean, crisp mountain skies.

Regardless if you are looking for thrills and speed, or just wanting to experience the tranquility of open space and majestic scenery, there are a variety of safe and fun choices in our region.

In these unique times, many Tahoe businesses have taken “lemons, and made lemonade,” adjusting to current safety protocols to provide safe activities for visitors and locals.

Regardless if you are looking for thrills and speed, or just wanting to experience the tranquility of open space and majestic scenery, there are a variety of safe and fun choices in our region.

Like the early pioneers who first inhabited these mountains, entrepreneurs are finding ways for guests to adapt, while still giving visitors a full Sierra experience. Bike riding in the winter? Yes, a new sport is gaining popularity in our area based on new bikes with extreme fat tires.

With these heavy-treaded monsters, gliding along a snowy meadow, or down a trail for more experienced riders combines the thrill and serenity of skiing with the exercise and rush of bike riding. Shoreline Bikes rents the Fat Tire bikes, which can be ridden on various trails and slopes depending on one’s courage and ambition.

There are several businesses providing different types of snowmobile tours in our area. Zephyr Cove Snowmobiling Tours, on the Nevada side of South Shore, provides guided tours through winding trails leading up to panoramic views of the lake. Enjoy a warm cup of hot chocolate with co-riders provided at one of the vistas.

Lake Tahoe Adventures offers riders the independence to explore different trails available in Hope Valley, just south of Lake Tahoe. These businesses are following safety mandates to ensure their riders are safe and distanced at all times.

The High Sierra is one of the few places in the world where one can ski a few runs in the morning, then play 18 holes that same afternoon. Carson Valley Golf Course in Gardnerville, less than an hour from both Tahoe and Reno, offers year-round golf, weather permitting.

“We restrict golfers to one per cart, unless golfers live in the same family,” said golf pro Beau Server. “We are disinfecting the carts each morning, then after every golfer is finished.”

If you want to see Lake Tahoe up close on a cool, crisp morning, plus possibly catch the evening’s dinner, bundle up and venture out on the lake on one of Tahoe’s fishing charter services. Tahoe Sportfishing offers daily, full-service excursions on the beautiful lake.

“We are operating our boats at 50-percent capacity,” says Erin Frederick, chief experience officer. “We clean our boats with non-aromatic disinfectants before and after every trip since the fish have a very sensitive sense of smell.” (Isn’t it great that they are so concerned about what the fish smell?)

Ski resorts for downhill skiing and snowboarding are in full swing with safety precautions in place. Fortunately, skiing and boarding utilize open-air and social distancing in which people naturally wear goggles and face coverings.

Some resorts are requiring reservations, plus gathering spaces such as restaurants, bars and rental facilities all have safety regulations. Check the ski area websites for details.

Other winter activities, such as snowshoeing, sledding, sleigh rides, cross-country skiing, and more are all available with the health and wellbeing of guests as the utmost concern.

As people adjust to the new normal, it gives us all a chance to try new opportunities. With the multitude of unforgettable options provided in this region, we’re able to experience adventures that will make their visit to the High Sierra most memorable. Enjoy Tahoe, my friends!
