Enjoy romantic outings around the Sierra

By Heidi Bethel

The Carson Valley and Lake Tahoe areas are renowned for enchanting settings, stunning views, delicious dining and exciting adventures. When my husband, Masten, and I need a little escape to purely enjoy each other’s company, there’s no better spot to venture than the Sierra Safely Trail.

Whether on or nearby the most romantic lake in the world, here are a few date ideas to get a little alone time in and make special memories together.

Day date

If your house is anything like mine, we have two little boys who wake up before the sun rises every single day. That said, mornings tend to be prime time for activities and when it’s a date day, early drop-offs with grandma or auntie.

Sans kiddos, caffeine is always a good idea and we like to stop at DST Coffee in Gardnerville before heading up the mountain. I love to order a beautifully constructed cappuccino, complete with a pretty foam design. Masten opts for a tried-and-true drip coffee with a dash of sugar.

After the scenic drive up to Big Blue, a quick stop in Clearly Tahoe and we’re off to explore the Lake Tahoe Water Trail aboard transparent kayaks. It is simply breathtaking paddling atop the crystal clear water where you can see gigantic boulders, sweet little minnows, and all the treasures that lay beneath the surface.

If lounging on the largest cruising vessel is more your pace, spend a few hours soaking in the view as your troll along on the M.S. Dixie II at Zephyr Cove Resort Lake Tahoe.

Lunch date

Whether you’re hungry after an exciting day date on the lake or just want to take a quick few hours to grab a meal with your honey, Fox & Hound is the place to go. Here you’ll enjoy some tasty barbecue and sweeping views of Carson Valley. After you get your fill of pulled pork, tri-tip, burgers and more, wash it down with a cold one at Lake Tahoe AleWorX. Definitely try a pint of the Lake Tahoe AleWorx Cali Common — it’s a great hoppy lager that is so smooth.

Evening date

Yearning for a vibrant sunset with hues of pink, orange and yellow to end the day? Book a stay at Edgewood Tahoe Resort, where you can enjoy the views from their luxurious lodging rooms or the expansive common areas with fire pits, comfy lounge nooks, and massive windows opening up to tree-lined beauty.

Now through April, you can lace up the skates at Edgewood on Ice. In the warmer months, head to the beach and cuddle on a blanket as the sun disappears behind the majestic peaks.

We enjoy the quick stroll, or Uber ride to Hard Rock Hotel and Casino or Harrah’s Lake Tahoe for some lucky pulls on the slots, exciting craps and table games, and a nightcap. It’s also so fun to catch a show or head to a nightclub to show off our moves.

Off-the-mountain date

For a lovely adventure in Carson Valley, Genoa Lakes Golf Club offers two championship courses, lake and ranch views, and a whole lot of fun. While my backswing could use some work, it’s always entertaining to get out there and hit a few balls. An apres meal at Overland Restaurant and Pub in Gardnerville completes the date experience featuring locally sourced meats, pasta, bread and produce with a nod to the deep Basque culture here.

Always full, satisfied and happy with our date on the Sierra Safely Trail, we head home to the family.

Romantic options abound in Carson Valley and Lake Tahoe. Whether you’re looking for a day date outdoors or evening by candlelight, you and your love are sure to get cuddly here.
